ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Wisconsin men's hockey team came up just short in their second game of the weekend against the Michigan Wolverines, dropping the matchup, 5-3, at Yost Ice Arena Saturday night.
After falling behind 4-1 in the third period, the attempted Wisconsin comeback was not enough for the Badgers to skate past the Wolverines on the road.
Almost halfway through the third period, sophomore
Linus Weissbach scored his fourth goal of the season to cut the Michigan lead in half. With plenty of time to play and momentum building in Wisconsin's favor and with an extra attacker on the ice, sophomore
K'Andre Miller netted his seventh of the year to pull Wisconsin within one.
A golden opportunity to tie it up on a shot from the slot by senior
Max Zimmer with about 30 seconds left was stopped by Michigan goaltender Strauss Mann before Michigan forward Garrett Van Wyhe sealed the game for the Wolverines scoring an empty-net goal with six seconds to play.
Zimmer did tally his third goal of the season to put the Badgers on the board in the first period. The forward scored on a Wisconsin power play from a feed off of freshman
Cole Caufield.
Caufield notched his seventh multi-point game of the season and second of the weekend with a pair of primary helpers.
Sophomore goalie
Daniel Lebedeff tallied 33 saves between the pipes for Wisconsin.
Notes to know:
- Senior Max Zimmer scored half his season's goals this weekend against Michigan, netting goals in both Friday's and Saturday's game
- Freshman Cole Caufield has now moved into a tie for ninth in all-time scoring as a freshman with 32 points total on the season
Straight from the rink:
Head Coach Tony Granato:
"I'm alright. I've learned a lot about the guys on our team this weekend that I wasn't so sure about and the fight that we had through this weekend was all i wanted to see. We will be ready for playoffs. We will finish the season the right way to get ready for it. This is a game that easily could have been won. We didn't get saves. There we're a couple I would have liked to have seen saved that took the breath out of us for a little while, but we kept coming."Â
Up Next: Wisconsin will return home to take on No. 9 Penn State next weekend in the Kohl Center. Game time is 7 p.m. both Friday and Saturday night with a broadcast on Fox Sports Wisconsin Saturday.
