Badger softball travels to their final weekend tournament
MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin softball team (10-9) will be competing in the USF tournament this weekend in Tampa, Florida to play in their final weekend tournament. The schedule for the weekend is as follows:
1. FRESHIE FIONA: Freshman third baseman, Fiona Girardot was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week. The River Forest, Illinois native has been off to a hot start this season and continued that this previous weekend at the Sun Devil Classic where she has two home runs, two doubles, four RBI and six scored runs. She recorded a .929 slugging percentage and .412 on-base percentage. This is her first time receiving the award and the last time a Wisconsin softball player has received it was when Kaitlyn Menz earned the honor February 20, 2017.
2.FIESTY FISH: Sophomore Jolie Fish played a huge roll in the upset win over ASU this previous weekend. In a 10-1 run-rule win, Fish contributed by hitting a grand slam in the top of the fourth inning to give the Badgers a 10-0 lead.
3.UPSET UPRISE: In their second upset of the season, Wisconsin softball beat the No. 17 Arizona State Sun Devils. After losing to ASU in a close game on the first nightof the tournament, the Badgers made a statement on the second night with a run-rule upset that gave UW a 10-1 win to a ranked team on their home field.
4.MIKLESH'S MIT: Center fielder, Ally Miklesh has been a solid player in the Badger defense. So far this season she has a 1.000 fielding percentage. She has zero errors on 13 catches, five of which came from this previous weekend at the Sun Devil Classic.
5. SCOUTING REPORT:
USF
The South Florida Bulls have a 11-8 record going into this weekend's tournament. Four of those wins come from top ranked opponents, Texas Tech, Georgia and Tennessee twice. Their standout players include pitcher Georgina Corrick and outfielder, AnaMarie Bruni. Corrick is the Bulls go to pitcher with a 7-3 record and 1.68 ERA. Bruni leads the team with a .417 batting average and 25 hits on the year so far. The Badgers have played USF five times in the last four years and the Bulls have the 3-2 edge in those last five matchups.
Iowa State
The Iowa State Cyclones are 10-9 so far this season with a notable win from No. 8 Michigan. Key player to watch for Iowa State is Sami Williams. Williams just broke Iowa State's all-time career home run records two weekends ago and is a big hitter on this squad. This season already she has seven home runs and a .387 hitting average. Wisconsin hasn't faced the Cyclones since 2014 where they won 6-3.
Massachusetts
The Massachusetts softball team has an overall 3-3 record this season as they approach this weekend's tournament. Caroline Videtto, a junior infielder, is the offensive leader on this team. She is at a .421 batting average with eight hits, eight runs and one home rune. The Badgers saw the Minutemen last year in Clearwater, Florida, where they topped them 8-0.
