MINNEAPOLIS – Despite playing a rigorous final game, the No. 2 Wisconsin women's hockey team came up short in the WCHA Final FaceOff championship game as No. 5 Ohio State scored in overtime to earn a 1-0 victory.
The Badgers (28-5-3 overall) came out with tenacity, dominating game play by winning 36-24 faceoffs and outshooting the Buckeyes (24-8-6 overall) by almost double to keep the game at a 0-0 tie for the entirety of regulation time.
However, OSU made a break for it just 4:25 into overtime as Tatum Skaggs split UW's defense to slide a goal past the Badgers' posts.
Three notes of the game:
- Abby Roque and Mekenzie Steffen were named to the all-tournament team.
- This marked UW's sixth-straight WCHA Final Faceoff championship game appearance.
- The Badgers outshot OSU 41-26.
Straight from the Rink:
UW Head Coach Mark Johnson
On the game:
"From my seat, it was a pretty good hockey game. both teams competed at a real high level. There were a lot of battles out there. The effort on both teams was really high, so it comes down to somebody capitalizing on an opportunity. It took until overtime for one team to capitalize, and we end up getting the short stick. Obviously, we're disappointed we're not taking the trophy home, but as I told the team, we still have another game left. So, we figure out tonight who we play, and we'll get ourselves ready for the next game.Â
On shot opportunities:
"You look at what opportunities you're getting. We attempted 85 shots. As a coach, you just preach, especially late in the game when you're still at 0-0, because any shot can go in, but credit to Ohio State. Their goaltender, when she needed to make saves, she obviously did that. When they needed to block shots, they did that quite consistently.
"Some nights the puck doesn't go in. We had some looks. I was impressed and proud of the team. They played hard, they competed hard for an extended period of battle today."
On the NCAA tournament:Â
"We'll see on the bus tonight who we're playing. At this point, whether it's 1-0 or 5-4, you just want to win. If you don't win, your season is over. It was always mentioned to me that the quarterfinal is the most difficult to win even when you're at home because you're in the tournament, but it's not the Frozen Four. It's a game where you look at the opponents this year, and a bunch of them have the chance to win it which is exciting for women's hockey. It's not like it was years ago, where you might pick one or two or three teams out of a field of eight. It's going to be exciting and all good games. That's why we call it March Madness. You never know what's going to happen."
Senior captain Mekenzie Steffen
On OSU's fast breaks:
"Before the game, we talked about just staying close and staying in their face. I thought we did a pretty good job of doing that. There were times where we had breakdowns, but [Kristen Campbell] always had our backs. Defensively, I thought we played really solid. I think we just need to work on getting more pucks in the net."
Senior netminder Kristen Campbell
On where the team stands defensively:
"I think we played really strong defense this weekend. We worked from the back end out and moving forward, I think we're in a really good position, and we just have to keep looking forward to our next opponent. Obviously, you want to give up as few of goals as possible, and I think that's something we really focus on. We want to be that locked in defense that we've been in the past year."
