MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women's hockey team announced its team awards for the 2019-20 season on Monday as eight different Badgers earned honors.
Senior
Alexis Mauermann was given the Badger Award, which is presented to the player who inspires others through her commitment to hard work and unselfish play. An alternate captain for the Badgers this past season, Mauermann recorded 16 points and a +23 plus/minus rating during her final season in Madison.
Fellow senior
Kristen Campbell was presented the Jeff Sauer Award, named after the legendary UW men's hockey coach, which is given to the player who consistently demonstrates dedication to her teammates, coaches and the sport of hockey. Campbell, a two-time All-American during her time in Wisconsin, became the first Badger to receive this award three-straight seasons.
A pair of All-Americans shared Offensive Player of the Year honors in
Abby Roque and
Daryl Watts. Roque was named a top-three finalist for the 2020 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, the WCHA Player of the Year, and a first-team All-American after recording a career-high 58 points. In her first season as a Badger, Watts broke the UW school record for assists in a single season with 49 and led the NCAA with 74 points.
Captain
Mekenzie Steffen was named the UW Defensive Player of the Year after earning second-team All-WCHA honors this past year. Steffen posted a career-high 29 points this season and became only the fifth UW blueliner to record 20 career goals. Her 85 points rank seventh in school history among UW defensemen.
Fellow defensemen
Chayla Edwards was named the UW Freshman of the Year after appearing in 35 games for UW and recording a +16 plus/minus rating that ranked second among all WCHA rookies. She also recorded three points and 21 blocks during her rookie campaign.
Junior
Caitlin Schneider was given the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, which is honors a student-athlete who has distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. Schneider recorded a career-high 17 points for UW this past season, including a game-winning overtime goal against No. 3 Northeastern that helped UW win the Battle at the Burgh tournament.
Rounding out the UW award winners was sophomore
Britta Curl, who won the W Club Community Service Award for having the most community service hours on the team this past season.
