Quick Six: Arizona State

Badgers wrap small non-conference slate with visit from Sun Devils
MADISON, Wis. — The games are all important, but this weekend when No. 12 Wisconsin men's hockey (6-6-0, 6-4-0-0-1-0 Big Ten) plays host to Arizona State (5-9-2), the Badgers look to build on their split against previously unbeaten and No. 1 Minnesota and build some momentum as the season returns to full swing.
The Badgers and Sun Devils meet on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. at LaBahn Arena. For Wisconsin, it is a chance to show that the sweep it absorbed at the hands of Arizona State in November was a blip on the screen with the Badgers down five key skaters due to the World Juniors and COVID protocols.
Here are six quick things to know before tuning in:
1. QUICK STARTS: Senior forward Linus Weissbach opened the scoring last Saturday in UW's 3-1 victory over No. 1 Minnesota. It marked the third time in 12 games this season that Weissbach tallied the first goal of the game. The Badgers are 3-0-0 in those games, including wins at Notre Dame in the season opener on Nov. 13, against Penn State on Nov. 24 and on Jan. 9 against Minnesota.
Wisconsin owns the first goal in eight of 12 contests this year, going 5-3-0 in those games, and are 5-1-0 when leading after the first period and 6-0-0 when leading after two periods.
2. MORE IS BETTER: Senior goaltender Robbie Beydoun started both games last weekend against No. 1 Minnesota (11-1-0) and stopped 35 shots in the Badgers' 3-1 victory on Saturday, which handed the Gophers their first loss of the season. Beydoun was also in net on Sunday, making him UW's starter between the pipes in 11 of the Badgers' 12 contests.
Beydoun stopped 35 of 36 shots last Saturday against Minnesota. He is 3-0-0 this year when making at least 35 saves in a game (49 vs. Penn State - Nov. 23; 35 vs. Penn State - Nov. 24).
3. MAKING HIS (SHORT-HANDED) MARK: Sophomore forward Owen Lindmark's short-handed, empty-net goal last Saturday against Minnesota tied him for the national lead with two short-handed goals this season. Western Michigan's Paul Washe and Boston College's Marc McLaughlin share the mark with Lindmark.
Lindmark is UW's current leader with four career short-handed goals.
In the first series against Arizona State, Lindmark posted his first career four-point game, tallying two goals and two assists in leading a Badgers' charge to close from 6-2 to 6-5 in the third period, before the Badgers finally succumbed.
4. STANLEY CUP CHAMP RAISES A BANNER: The NHL returned on Wednesday with defending Stanley Cup champion Ryan McDonagh helping raise a banner with the Tampa Bay Lightning before the champs skated through Chicago, 5-1. McDonagh leads at least 13 Badgers to crack NHL opening night rosters on Wednesday, Jan 13. K'Andre Miller, a defenseman on the Badgers roster last season, is expected to make his NHL debut for the Rangers. Former UW captain Wyatt Kalynuk is among the group as a member of the Chicago Blackhawks' taxi squad in his first year as a pro. The Badgers could potentially have up to 15 former players in the league to start. A handful of teams have yet to name their opening-night rosters.

5. SCOUTING ASU: Like the Badgers, the Sun Devils are coming off a split series against Notre Dame last week. Senior forward James Sanchez is also coming off a hot series with three assists in ASU's 5-4 loss. The coaches, staff, players and their families are the first to see the championship banner reveal. ⚡️ pic.twitter.com/rIEWBCJAcg
