Quick Six: On the road again

Badgers resume Big Ten play against Penn State

MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin men's hockey team will hit the road for its first road series of 2021 to take on the Penn State Nittany Lions. This matchup marks a stretch of Big Ten action after the Badgers completed their last series of non-conference play against ASU. Here are six quick things to know before tuning in:

1 - BIG LEADS: Senior forward Linus Weissbach and sophomore forward Cole Caufield currently share the Big Ten scoring lead with 17 points each. Caufield, who won the Big Ten scoring title last season, also leads in goals per game average in the Big Ten with 1.40. The Montreal draft pick boasts a six-game point streak, matching his career-high, with four goals and five assists. Weissbach also has a point streak of four games.

2 - HOT SWEEP: Both the Badgers and Nittany Lions are coming off sweeping wins from their last series. The Badgers took two at home, 4-0 and 5-2, against the Arizona State Sun Devils, while Penn State beat the Michigan State Spartans, 3-2 in overtime and 3-1. The last time Wisconsin faced Penn State this season, they swept at LaBahn Arena in November..That included the second career hat trick for Cole Caufield.

3 - NINE ARE FINE: A total of nine different Badgers lit the lamp last weekend in a set of games against ASU, including defensemen Mike Vorlicky and Tyler Inamoto who netted their first goals of the season. Jack Gorniak, Josh Ess, Ty Pelton Byce, Linus Weissbach, Cole Caufield, Jason Dhooghe, and Brock Caufield also found the back of the net.

4 - SHUT DOWN AND SHUT OUT: The Badgers came out strong against ASU in their first game of the series and kept the Sun Devils to just 11 shots on net, all of which were saved by freshman goaltender Cameron Rowe for his first career shutout. Rowe also had a stellar performance in game two with 23 saves in his squad's 5-2 win. The performances helped him earn Big Ten Third Star of the Week.

5 - SCOUTING PENN STATE: The Nittany Lions are 5-7-0-1-0-0 in Big Ten play this season, having won three consecutive games and seven of their last nine. In comparison, the Badgers are 6-4-0-0-1-0 in Big Ten action with wins in three of their last four matchups since beginning the second phase of their season on Jan. 9. Senior forward and Penn State captain Alex Limoges leads his team in scoring with eight goals and 14 points, including the overtime winner against MSU last weekend. Kevin Wall, a sophomore forward on Penn State, recorded two or more points in three of his last four games, including a goal and an assist against the Spartans.
