Here are five more things to know before the Badgers step on the mats on Sunday:
1. The match starts at 1 p.m. and will be streamed live on BTN+ (subscription required). Extra matches will occur after.
2. The Boilermakers first wrestle #10 Illinois in Champaign on Friday at 8 p.m. before making the trek north to Madison. Purdue opened its season last Friday with a 28-8 win against No. 21 Northwestern at home. The Boilermakers were short six starters against the Wildcats and started four true freshmen in the dual, but are projected to return more experience to the roster this weekend. No. 3 senior Devin Schroder earned a 16-0 technical fall against NU's Matt Vinci in 4:13, while No. 18 sophomore Thomas Penola defeated Jon Halvorsen 21-6 for a second Boilermaker TF at 197 pounds. In total, eight Purdue wrestlers earned victories in the team win.
3. The Badgers opened their season on the road at Illinois last Sunday in a tri-meet against then #24 Illinois and #7 Ohio State. The Badgers fell 25-9 to the Buckeyes and 21-9 to the Illini in team scoring. Redshirt junior Garrett Model led the Badgers with two wins for the weekend, going undefeated at 157 pounds against both the Illini and Buckeyes. Model earned a 7-3 decision victory against Illinois' Johnny Mologousis and then upset Ohio State's then #22 Elijah Clearly with a 3-2 decision. Fellow redshirt junior Trent Hillger earned a pin for the team and six team points after defeating Ohio State's Tate Orndorff in 6:39 in a thrilling bonus-point victory. Wisconsin also picked up wins at 174 pounds from redshirt sophomore Jared Krattiger over DJ Shannon (6-2 decision) and at 184 pounds from recent transfer and redshirt senior Chris Weiler over Zach Braunagel (8-2 decision).
4. Thanks to their performances over the weekend, two Badgers — Garrett Model and Chris Weiler — both saw favorable nods from various national rankings for individual wrestlers. Model earned his first ranking in FloWrestling's 157-pound listing at #24 and also climbed from #28 to #21 on TrackWrestling's list. Chris Weiler's been a presence on all national rankings this season at 184 pounds, but FloWrestling also bumped him up from #13 to #9 and WIN Magazine saw him climb from #9 to #8.
More information on starters, rankings and team stats are available in this week's match notes.
