Badgers drop series finale to Penn State

Wisconsin's comeback effort falls short

MADISON, Wis. — Despite battling until the final minute, the Wisconsin men's hockey team fell 5-4 to Penn State in their final matchup of the 2020-21 season.

Penn State (8-8-0, 6-8-0-1-0-0) came out of the gate strong with a goal at 2:54 of the first period and another one just 13 seconds later. Later in the first period at 15:40, the Nittany Lions scored on the power play, leaving the Badgers (9-7-0, 7-5-0-0-1-0) down 3-0 early in the game.

Dylan Holloway got the Badgers on the board at 7:09 in the second period with his third goal of the season. Junior forward Brock Caufield got the puck to Roman Ahcan just outside the Badger's blue line. Ahcan got caught up with Penn State's defenseman on the boards, but was able to push the puck up and send Holloway on a breakaway.

Penn State restored its three-goal lead before the end of the period, scoring at 9:14 of the second period to make it 4-1.

The Badgers started the third period on the man advantage, exercising their power-play unit that proved lethal against Penn State in Thursday's matchup.

Halfway through the third period Cole Caufield sent the puck deep in the offensive zone for Anthony Keher. The freshman defenseman skated around the back of the goal and connected with Ahcan who buried the puck in the net.

Ty Pelton-Byce brought the Badgers within one at 12:02 of the third period, thanks to an assist from Holloway.

The Badgers pulled netminder Robbie Beydoun and opted for the extra skater with under three minutes remaining. However, Penn State took advantage of the open net and restored their two-goal lead.

Cole Caufield refused to go down without a fight and continued to battle in the final minute of the game. A lucky bounce in front of the net accounted for his tenth goal of the season, assisted by Kehrer and Holloway at 19:45 of the third period.

Freshman Cameron Rowe started the game, making 13 saves before Beydoun came in for Rowe at the 15:40 mark of the first. Beydon ended the nigh with 21 saves for UW.

The Badgers' loss marked an end to their three-game win streak and put them at 3-1-0 against Penn State for this season.

Notes to know:

  • Cole Caufield extended his point streak to seven games.
  • Dylan Holloway recorded two or more points in his last three games.
  • The Badgers have only trailed in the first period three times all season.
