Pettet powers No. 1 Badgers to 1-0 win at Minnesota State

Senior co-captain scores to help UW earn its first sweep of the season

MANKATO, Minn.— Thanks to a late goal by senior co-captain Brette Pettet, the No. 1 Wisconsin women's hockey team earned a 1-0 win at Minnesota State on Sunday afternoon at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center.

Pettet pounced on a loose puck in front of the Minnesota State (2-7-1, 2-7-1-0 WCHA) net to score her second goal of the year and to help Wisconsin (3-1-0, 3-1-0-0 WCHA) to a sweep.

The Badgers dominated play in the first, despite being on the penalty kill twice, as they outshot MSU 13-5.

In the second, UW had four power-play opportunities, but were unable to capitalize on them while outshooting the Mavericks 16-5.

The third period was balanced, as MSU outshot UW 11-9, but Pettet was able to score to break the deadlock for the Cardinal and White.

Three Notes of the Game

  • Kennedy Blair stopped all 21 shots she faced to earn her second shutout of the season. The senior netminder is tied for the WCHA and NCAA lead this season for shutouts.

  • Wisconsin held MSU scoreless on its four power-play chances Sunday afternoon. UW has now killed all nine of its penalties during the 2020-21 season.

  • Sophie Shirley and Daryl Watts each picked up their third assists of the year on Pettet's goal.

Senior goaltender Kennedy Blair:
On the shutout win

"It felt good, I think our team played really well in front of me, came back from yesterday and I think every girl put their hearts out today and did what we needed to do to get the win."

On starting the year with a sweep
"It's really important, especially going into these next 12 games now, we have a 2-0 lead and going to Ohio State we just have to have that confidence and all that. I think coming off this weekend is really good for the upcoming game."

On her first chance to play at LaBahn next weekend
"I'm definitely super excited. Obviously it's not going to be the same without fans but it's going to be a new experience, new opportunity. I've played there on the opposing side as a freshman and now I'm on the opposite side and I'm really excited about it."

Up Next: The Badgers will play their first home games of the 2020-21 season when they welcome Ohio State to LaBahn Arena this Friday and Saturday.
