COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Wisconsin men's soccer team is continuing its remarkable play after shutting out Ohio State 2-0 Friday night.
Senior
Andrew Akindele scored in the 39th minute off a cross from
Henri Tophoven. This now marks the first time the forward from Illinois has tallied back-to-back goals in a match.
The game began with quick possessions for the Badgers, but towards the middle of the first half the Buckeyes found most of the touches on their side of the pitch. However, the Akindele strike shut down the OSU attack for the rest of the first 45 minutes of play.
Coming into the second half, UW played true to their style of soccer by locking down on defense and limiting scoring chances for Ohio State.
The team had to do so with a different keeper in goal as
Adir Raphael played the first half for the Badgers and
Carter Abbott went on to finish the game in goal for UW.
Akindele had another close chance in the 64th minute on an open net, but missed his opportunity about one foot right of the goal post.
The Badgers did strike in the last minute of the match off an
Ignasi Marques strike, which was also assisted by Tophoven. The 90th minute goal is Marques' second of the season.
This is the third time UW has won a game 2-0 and the program is on a four-game winning streak, allowing zero goals in that span.
Raphael picked up four saves, while Abbott finished the night with one. This is the second game in a row when the two have split playing time. Both keepers have goals against averages below 0.50.
