MADISON – The 13th-ranked Wisconsin women's cross-country travels to Tallahassee, Florida, to compete in the 2021 NCAA Championships on Saturday. The women's 6,000 meter race begins at 9:20 a.m. CT on the Florida State Cross Country Course at Apalachee Regional Park.
1. THE BADGERS ARE BACK: For the first time since 2019, the Badgers return to compete on the national stage. After starting the season ranked 29th in the nation and sixth in the region, Wisconsin continued to improve over the season, winning multiple races, finishing in the top 10 at the Nuttycombe Invitational, and finishing second at the Big Ten Championships. The Badgers automatically punched their ticket to NCAAs by finishing second at the Great Lakes Regional with 69 points. Wisconsin finished only 13 points behind Great Lakes Regional champs Notre Dame and ahead of Big Ten foe Michigan, which took third with 87 points.
2. "DANCING WITH THE BOY THAT TOOK US TO PROM": According to head coach Mackenzie Wartenberger, the team will depend on its pack running - a tactic that's been crucial to the team's success this season. At the regional championships, all five scorers finished within 10 seconds of each other and all seven competitors ran personal best times. In addition to their outstanding performance at regionals, the Badgers also finished within 15 seconds of one another at the Big Ten Championships to finish second.
3. NIGGEMANN LEADS THE PACK: Fifth-year senior Alissa Niggemann has had an outstanding season, leading Wisconsin at the Nuttycombe Invitational and Big Ten Championships in addition to finishing first for the Badgers at regionals when she secured seventh place in 20 minutes, 10.2 seconds. Junior Samantha Stieve has also played a significant role this season, as she crossed the line within seconds behind Niggemann at both Big Tens and regionals. Other key returners competing this weekend include Stella Gillman, Lucinda Crouch, Victoria Heiligenthal, Danielle Orie, and Shea Rhuly.
4. MACK AT THE HELM: Coach Mackenzie Wartenberger has led her teams to five NCAA appearances, including two at Wisconsin, and has coached five All-Americans including Olympian Alicia Monson. Within Wisconsin's greater history at NCAAs the team has made 30 NCAA Championship appearances, won two national titles and crowned three individual champions.
