Three Badgers make first career starts in UW's 81-58 victory
MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men's basketball team officially began its 2021-22 season with an 81-58 win over St. Francis Brooklyn on Tuesday night at the Kohl Center.
Sophomore Johnny Davis made his first career start sparking the offense with a pair of field goals and sparking a 12-0 run for the Badgers. He went on to finish with 15 points, a career-high five assists, as well as three rebounds and two steals.
True freshman Chucky Hepburn impressed in his first collegiate game, finishing with 13 points, including 2-for-3 shooting from 3-point range. Hepburn became the first true freshman to start in the season opener for Wisconsin since Devin Harris in 2001.
Wisconsin shot 43.9 percent from the floor, while holding the Terriers to 39.7 percent shooting on the night.
The Badgers led by as many as 32 points in the second half and outscored St. Francis Brooklyn, 13-1, on the fast break. UW's 13 fast-break points were the team's most since scoring 17 points in transition against Rutgers back on Jan. 15, 2021. Wisconsin had 13 or more fast break points just five times last season.
Wisconsin returns to action Friday at the Kohl Center hosting in-state foe Green Bay. The game is scheduled to tip at 7 p.m. CT on B1G+. Former coach Bo Ryan will be recognized at the game.
