MADISON, Wis. — The 13th-ranked Wisconsin women's cross country team travels to Evansville, Indiana, this Friday for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. The Badgers, who are ranked second in the region, are looking to qualify for the NCAA championships on Nov. 20 in Tallahassee, Florida. The women's 6K race takes off at 10 a.m. CT with the men's 10K race starts at 11 a.m. CT.
1. THE RACE TO QUALIFY: The Badgers are looking to qualify for their 58th NCAA Championship on Friday. The top-two teams in each of nine regionals receive an automatic bid to the NCAA championship. Regular-season performance and how teams perform within their regional will be the main factors of consideration for the remaining 13 teams to receive at-large bids. Wisconsin ranks second in the region behind Michigan. Michigan State, Toledo and Notre Dame, respectively, round out the top-five teams.
2. IMPROVING DURING THE SEASON: The Badgers have improved this season after starting the year ranked sixth in the region and 29th nationally. Wisconsin won its first race, finished second at the Live in Lou Classic and took 10th at the Nuttycombe Invitational before an outstanding performance at the Big Ten Championships. UW took second, only six points behind team champion Minnesota, and a four-place improvement over the 2020 championships.
3. IT'S A BADGER PACK: Pack running has been a key part of Wisconsin's success this season. A trio of runners have led the Badgers this season. Senior Lucinda Crouch led the Badgers to victory at the Bradley Intercollegiate, when she won the race in 16 minutes, 21.5 seconds, while sophomore Shea Rhuly emerged as a contender when she led the Badgers to second place at the Live in Lou Classic.
At the last two meets, veteran Alissa Niggemann led Wisconsin to its top-10 finish at the Nuttycombe Invitational when she took 29th in 29:40.1. At the Big Ten Championships, Niggemann and junior Samantha Stieve guided the Badgers to a second-place team finish with their 10th and 11th-place finishes, respectively, as UW's top five finishers crossed the line within 14 seconds of each other.
4. B1G HONORS: Niggemann and Stieve earned second-team All Big Ten at the Big Ten Championships. Stieve also received the Big Ten Sportsmanship for her contributions on and off the course.
