GENEVA, Ohio -- Behind a gold medal in the distance medley relay and a pair of top-three finishes in the 3,000 meters, the Wisconsin men's track and field team sits third in the Big Ten Conference Indoor Championships after the first of three days of competition. Iowa leads after four events with 30 points while Minnesota ranks second with 25 points. The Badgers scored 24 points at The SPIRE on Thursday.Â
DMR brings home gold
The quartet of
Shuaib Aljabaly,
Colin Enz,
Ansel Fellman and
Jackson Sharp broke the tape in 9 minutes, 36.49 seconds to bring home gold for the Badgers. Aljabaly kicked off the relay, running 2:58 for 1,200 meters. Enz took the baton with the Badgers in second place, running 47.5 for 400 meters. Fellman had the Badgers in third place after the 800-meter leg, running 1:49.0. Sharp settled in for the mile run, saving his best for the last lap. The Australia native trailed only Illinois' Jonathon Davis until the last 100-meters when he took the lead down the final stretch, beating Illinois by six-hundredths of a second (9:36.55). Sharp ran the 1600-meter run in 4:01.6 to break the tape and bring home gold.Â
Rowen Ellenberg and
Olin Hacker both placed in the top three in the 3,000 run. Ellenberg moved up two places in the last lap to bring home silver in 8:05.66. Graduate student
Olin Hacker had an incredible last-lap kick, moving up from eighth place to finish third in 8:05.88.
Heptathlon day one
A trio of freshmen --
Cade Amborn,
Max Herkert and
Quinn Lansill -- all completed the first day of the heptathlon. Amborn sits eighth after four events, racking up 2,800 points. Herkert is 11th with 2,618 points and Lansill is 12th with 2,589 points.
Amborn started the day, placing eighth in the 60-meter dash in 7.38. He also came in eighth in the long jump at 22-feet, 1/4 inch and took sixth in the shot put at 42-2. He ended the day, tying for sixth in the high jump at 5-11 1/2. Herkert and Lansill also tied for sixth in the high jump at 5-11 1/2. Herkert also finished eighth in the long jump at 20-7 3/4 and 10th in the shot put at 37-10 3/4. Lansill finished ninth in the 60 meters in 7.36 and 10th in the long jump at 20-7 1/4.

The Badgers kick off day two of the Big Ten Championships with the remaining three events of the men's heptathlon, beginning with the 60-meter hurdles at 9:30 a.m. CT. Preliminaries for the running events begin at 10:35 a.m. while finals in the field events begin at 11 a.m.
