LEESBURG, Florida – It was a tale of two very different games on Thursday as the Wisconsin softball team played its second-longest game in school history, suffering a 7-5 setback to Ohio State before the Badgers earned a run-rule 10-1 win in the second game of the doubleheader at the Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex.
Maddie Schwartz threw nine scoreless innings in the first game and broke a school record for innings pitched in a game, going 13 and 2/3 total innings.
Game 1
The Badgers and Buckeyes played nine scoreless innings before each team scored in 10th inning as
Morgan Kummer crossed home plate to tie the game at 1-1.
After giving up a run at the top of the 11th, Donahue scored thanks to a single by
Christaana Angelopulos to knot the game at 2-2.
Down 5-2 in the bottom of the 14th, the Badgers rallied and scored three runs to send the game to the 15th inning.
Peyton Bannon had an RBI single that plated fellow freshman
Sylvia Flairty before Kummer launched her second home run of the year to tie the game at 5-5.
However, OSU scored twice in the top of the 15th and UW was unable to plate any runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Maddie Schwartz set a school record by pitching 13 2/3 innings, including nine-straight shutout innings. The junior had 11 strikeouts and allowed only two earned runs.
Game 2
UW took a 1-0 lead after two innings as freshman Payton Bannon scored after advancing on a pair of OSU pitching miscues.
The Badgers extended their lead to 3-0 thanks to a trio of doubles in the fourth inning. Bannon opened the inning with a double before scoring after Angelpulos doubled to right center.
Megan Donahue also doubled to right center with two outs, sending home Angelopulos from second base.
After OSU scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, the Badgers scored seven in the top half of the sixth.
Megan Donahue had an RBI bunt to score
Ally Miklesh to restore UW's three-run lead before
Gabby Altobelli singled home Angelopulos to make it a 5-1 lead.
Following a Kummer walk,
Skylar Sirdashney launched a single up the middle to score both Altobelli and
Alyssa McClelland to make it a 7-1 lead.
Abby Herbst hit a double to left, scoring Kummer before scoring herself off of a
Lauren Foster single to center field. Bannon hit a double to left field to score Foster to cap off the inning for UW.
Haley Hestekin earned the win for UW, giving up three hits while allowing one earned run.
