UW notches 1-1 tie at Northwestern
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Adrenaline was pumping from the Badger bench tonight after junior Andrew Akindele secured the first tie of the season for the Wisconsin men's soccer team, 1-1, during an indoor match against Northwestern Monday night.
Following a relatively quiet first half at the Ryan Fieldhouse, the Badgers (0-5-1) began to take control from the Wildcats (2-3-1) in the second and ignited their energy.
Unfortunately, Northwestern beat UW to the scoreboard in the 61st minute as Wildcat sophomore forward Ugo Achara Jr. notched a goal.
Wisconsin turned around immediately though and showed a more aggressive attack just six minutes later.
With a downfield pass from freshmen midfielder Murat Calkap and forward Jack Finnegan, junior forward Andrew Akindele recorded his second goal of the season against Northwestern graduate student goalkeeper Ethan Bandre.
Wisconsin dominated possession for the remainder of the game leading to a double overtime that ultimately ended in a 1-1 draw, a comeback from the 5-2 loss in its first matchup with Northwestern Feb. 23.
The Badgers aimed for the win in overtime as junior Moritz Kappelsberger, freshman Murat Calkap, Akindele and junior Zach Klancnik all fired shots on goal.
The Badgers held a 14-13 shots advantage, with a 7-5 edge on goal. Northwestern led 9-3 in corner kicks.
Up next: The Badgers are scheduled to play host to Ohio State on Friday, March 19 at 1 p.m. CT, likely in Madison, Wisconsin.
