Beydoun records third career Badger shutout

EAST LANSING, Mich. — The No. 5 Wisconsin men's hockey team (18-8-1, 16-6-1 0-1-1 Big Ten) took the first game of their final series of the season 4-0 over the Michigan State Spartans (7-15-2, 5-14-1 2-1-0 Big Ten) on Friday afternoon at Munn Ice Arena.

MSU struggled to contain the Badgers offense, especially on the power-play.

Senior Tarek Baker gave the Badgers an early 1-0 lead at 1:57 in the first period, scoring with help from defensemen Josh Ess and Ty Emberson.

Jack Gorniak extended the Badgers lead with a goal at 8:12 after a shot block by Brock Caufield sent him on the way up the ice.

The Badgers went on the power play in the second period, and Cole Caufield took just six seconds to put the puck in the net. He increased his scoring total to 23 on an expert setup from Linus Weissbach and Ty Pelton-Byce to give Wisconsin a 3-0 lead.

Pelton-Byce added onto the Badgers' tally shortly after with a goal nine seconds into the next power play at 11:27 of the second period. Weissbach slid the puck across the top of the zone to Cole Caufield, whose shot was blocked in front, but Pelton-Byce was right there to fire the puck past MSU goaltender Drew DeRidder.

Both teams went scoreless in the third period, leading the Badgers to a 4-0 victory

Goaltender Robbie Beydoun stood tall in net, stopping all 28 shots he faced for his third career shutout with the Badgers.

The Badgers went 2-for-3 on the power play, raising their nation's best power play to 32.1 percent
Wisconsin ranks third in the nation for goals per game at 3.89.
Cole Caufield leads the nation with 23 goals and 44 points, seven goals ahead of the next highest scorer.
The Badgers could potentially claim the Big Ten Conference regular-season title with a victory tomorrow against MSU and Minnesota falling at least once this weekend
