Suguiyama elevates third-year assistant coach
Wisconsin swimming and diving head coach Yuri Suguiyama is elevating third-year assistant coach Erik Posegay to be Associate Head Coach, he announced Friday.
"There are very few coaches who invest in the craft of coaching like Erik does," Suguiyama said. "His ability to develop our student-athletes in the pool and his investment in their lives out of it, has been a huge asset to our program. We're fortunate to have him here in Madison. I look forward to working with him for years to come."
The past season was filled with many challenges and setbacks, but Posegay helped guide the Badgers to many successes in spite of it all. Caleb Aman, Tazman Abramowicz and Josh Dannhauser all earned honorable mention All-America status on the men's side. Wes Jekel took third place in the 100 Fly and the 200 IM at the Big Ten Championships, while Dannhauser took third in the 500 free.
On the women's side, freshman Phoebe Bacon became a national champion in the 200 Back after already placing third in the 100 Back and fourth place in the 200 IM at NCAAs. She also claimed gold in the 100 and 200 Back races at the Big Ten Championships. Additionally, the women's 800 Free Relay squad clinched All-America honors after a 13th-place finish at NCAAs.
Out of the pool, 32 student-athletes were named Academic All-Big Ten honorees for the 2020-21 season.
In 2019-20, Posegay and the Wisconsin staff garnered one Big Ten relay championship (800 Free Relay), three individual Big Ten titles, (Beata Nelson – 200 IM, 100 Back, 200 Back), seven school records (Women's 100 Fly, 400 Medley Relay, 800 Free Relay; Men's 200 IM, 200 Medley Relay, 400 Medley Relay, Men's Platform), 12 CSCAA All-Americans, and Beata Nelson was named the Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient, while Eric Geunes received the Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarship.
In his first season with the Badgers, Posegay helped the Badgers to bring in one Relay All-American (800 Free Relay – Hosack, Nelson, Doty, Unicomb), one individual Honorable Mention All-American in Cameron Tysoe (200 Back), and six school records (Women's 200 IM, 100 Back, 200 Back, 800 Free Relay; Men's 100 Breast, 200 Breast). Additionally, Tysoe qualified for the World University Games and had a fifth-place finish in the 200 Back.
