COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Three members of the Wisconsin men's track and field team advanced to the next round of their respective events at the NCAA West Qualifying Regional on Wednesday.

Trio advances

Freshman Abdullahi Hassan led the way for the Badgers on the first day of competition, finishing third in his heat and seventh overall in the 800 meters. The Toronto native ran a personal best of 1 minute, 47.97 seconds to advance to Friday's quarterfinal at 7:35 p.m.

Sophomore L.O. Johnson also ran a personal best, finishing third in his heat of the 100 meters in 10.27. His time ties for fourth on the UW outdoor top-10 performance list and ranks him 19th overall in the region. The quarterfinals of the 100 meters will be held on Friday at 7:05 p.m.

Sophomore Jackson Sharp qualified for the final of the 1500 meters, finishing fourth in his heat and 20th overall in 3:45.59. Freshman Jack Meijer, who was seeded 48th coming into the meet, finished 11th in his heat and 44th overall in 3:53.90. Sharp will run in the quarterfinals of the event on Friday at 5:45 p.m.

Wednesday Finals

Three other Badgers competed in the finals of their respective events on Wednesday.

Junior Seth Hirsch finished 24th in the 10,000 meters, battling the 80-plus degree heat to cross in 30:07.36. Hirsch was seeded 27th entering the meet.

Throwers Andrew Stone and Cole Hooper were both competing in their first NCAA Preliminary Round. Stone placed 24th in the shot put at 59 feet, 5 inches while Hooper finished 33rd in the hammer at 195-0, improving eight places from his pre-meet seed.

In the only other event for the Badgers, freshman Davis Wenthe finished sixth in his heat of the 400-meter hurdles in 52.51, which ranked him 40th overall.

Up Next

Day one of the NCAA West Preliminary Round for the Badger women begins on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. Wisconsin qualified 15 women to regional competition.

The three qualifiers for the Badger men as well as Olin Hacker in the 5,000 meters will compete on Friday with events beginning at 1 p.m.
