Wisconsin native second Badger chosen in 2021 NHL Draft
MADISON, Wis. – Incoming freshman defenseman Daniel Laatsch became the second Wisconsin Badger picked in the 2021 NHL Draft this weekend when he was selected in the seventh round, 215th overall to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday.
Â
Laatsch, a 6-5 Altoona native, joins fellow incoming defenseman Corson Ceulemans in this year's draft class. Ceulemans went in the first round, 25th overall, to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday evening.
Â
The first Badger picked by Pittsburgh since Matt Hussey in 1998, Laatsch is the ninth UW skater to go to the Penguins, tied for fourth-most of any franchise. UW women's head coach Mark Johnson was the first in the 1977 draft.
Â
Laatsch played last season with the USHL's Sioux City Mucketeers after spending the prior two seasons with the U.S. National Team Development Program.
Wisconsin will enter the 2021-22 season with 10 NHL draft picks on its roster.
