TOKYO – Wisconsin rowing has a long history of turning walk-ons into Olympians and Maddie Wanamaker continued that tradition by finishing seventh in the 2020 Olympic Summer Games in the women's four without coxswain on Wednesday morning in Japan.

In the B Final, the United States turned in its best performance of the Olympics and won in 6:33.65 ahead of second-place Denmark to claim seventh overall. Romania and Canada, two crews that had bested the Americans in earlier rounds of the competition, finished third and fourth in the race.

Racing on Sea Forest Waterway in Tokyo, Wanamaker's crew fell in behind early-leader Romania along with Denmark, but took over the lead by 750 and never gave it up.

In the A Final, Australia captured the gold medal, while Netherlands and Ireland won silver and bronze, respectively.

The women's four without coxswain was only raced at one other Olympics games back in 1992 in Barcelona, Spain. That year, the U.S. crew won silver with Badgers Cindy Eckert and Carol Feeney in the boat.

Wanamaker, a Neenah, Wisconsin, native, was one of three former Badger rowers in Tokyo as part of Team USA. Middleton, Wisconsin, native Vicky Opitz made here second Olympic trip as a team alternate, while Matt Imes served as the team's high performance director.
