Defense plays key role in volleyball scrimmage
MADISON, Wis. – Behind a match-high 10 kills from Devyn Robinson, the Red team swept the White team at the annual Wisconsin Volleyball intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday in the UW Field House. The Red team won 25-21, 25-18, 25-17.
"With all scrimmages, it's great to get out there and play in front of fans again," head coach Kelly Sheffield said. "It was a real exciting day, being able to drop the banners (and) being able to have fans for the first time in 20 months. We had nine people who have been here and never played in front of fans. It was cool to see how many people were here today.
"I thought we passed the ball really well. I think all of the players will be able to leave here … with quite a few things that they will be happy about and quite a few things that we have to work on. I know the energy was high and everyone was really excited about being out there again."
In addition to Robinson, Grace Loberg had seven kills while Dana Rettke and freshman Lauren Jardine both put away five kills for the Red team. For the White team, freshman Anna Smrek led the squad with eight kills while Danielle Hart and freshman Julia Orzoł added seven kills apiece.

Both teams recorded 10 team blocks while the Red team finished with a 35-25 advantage in digs.
Robinson and Hart led the Red and White teams, respectively, with five blocks each. Rettke chipped in four blocks for the Red team.

The Red team also tallied five service aces, including three from Barnes.
Wisconsin opens the 2021 season next weekend when it hosts the Big Ten-Big 12 Challenge in the UW Field House. The No. 2 Badgers take on TCU on Friday at 6 p.m. while seventh-ranked Minnesota faces No. 10 Baylor at 8:30 p.m. The teams switch opponents on Saturday with UW taking on the Bears and the Golden Gophers facing TCU at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., respectively. Both matches air live on the Big Ten Network.
