Badgers take charity exhibition, 15-1

Wisconsin hosted first in-state opponent in program history

MADISON, Wis.— The Wisconsin women's hockey team won 15-1 in an exhibition game against UW-Eau Claire at LaBahn Arena on Monday evening that also brought in more than 1000 books to the Madison community

The Badgers saw goals from 10 different players in the exhibition game against the Blugolds. Nicole LaMantia, Grace Shirley, Daryl Watts, Makenna Webster and Maddi Wheeler Wheeler all had two goals each while Chayla Edwards, Maddie Posick, Caitlin Schneider, Sophie Shirley and Sarah Wozniewicz each put up a goal apiece.

Wisconsin put up seven goals in the first period. Schneider put the Badgers on the board first. She was followed by two goals from LaMantia and Wheeler and one goal each from Wozniewicz and Posick to close out the first period with a 7-0 lead over the Blugolds.

The Badgers found the net six times in the second period. Edwards and Grace Shirley both lit the lamp, followed by two goals from both Watts and Webster to close out the second frame up 13-0.

The Blugolds put up a goal halfway through the final period to bring the score to 13-1. The Shirley sisters then each put up a goal to cap the game off at 15-1.

Cami Kronish stopped all four Blugold shots in the first period. Jane Gervais stopped five shots between the second and third periods.

Straight from the Rink
Head Coach Mark Johnson
On the opportunity to play the Blugolds:
"To me, it's better than practice. We get a lot more things out of it than we can in practice."

On possibility to extend series with future DIII opponents:
"If you can attach it to some kind of fundraiser. You can give back to the community and then it works out really well. Hopefully next time we can go into someone else's building and we can take our product into somebody's backyard and grow our women's sports."

On the opportunity to travel and showcase DI hockey to places without it:
"As we've seen the last ten to fifteen years, the growth of women's hockey is very rapid. A lot of cities and states may not have Division I hockey so when we go out to California or Florida, it gives girls playing out there an idea what Division I hockey looks like and give them an idea on how to get there one day."

Senior forward Maddie Posick
On UWEC:
"They're a good team. They're definitely skilled and there's a reason why they're one of the top teams in the nation and I would love to see them play against some other WCHA teams. Anybody in Minnesota I think would be happy to play them. It's a different opponent, especially since last year we played the same teams over and over. It would be cool to play different teams, see different people, have different talent, change up our system, things like that."

On playing for a Wisconsin crowd:
"I felt very proud to be a Badger today. I'm always proud to be a Badger, but growing up I think I would've been right on the glass, right there. I would've been pressed up, asking for a stick and pucks. As someone from Wisconsin I think it's an awesome game. I saw a lot of people that I know and girls that I've coached and that just makes you smile. You go out there and you play extra hard because you want them to see that they can do it too. I'm not a crazy celebrity, I'm just a girl who plays hockey and was once in their shoes."

Up Next:
UW will take on St. Thomas this weekend at LaBahn Arena. Puck drop on both Saturday and Sunday is set for 2 p.m. and tickets are still available on UWBadgers.Com.
