De St. Phalle claims Big Ten third star of the week

MADISON, Wis. —  After a successful weekend at home against Michigan State, the Wisconsin men's hockey team is back on the road for a weekend matchup with the Nittany Lions of Penn State.

Rosters: Badgers || Penn State

Here are six quick things to know before tuning in:

1 - HOME SWEEP HOME: The Badgers won 5-2 and 3-2 over MSU for a sweep of the series last weekend in Madison. The pair of victories came as Wisconsin's second series sweep of the season, the first also coming at home against Army back in October.

2 - DE ST. PHALLE TAKES OFF: Sophomore forward Mathieu De St. Phalle's three goals against MSU, including the game-winner on Saturday night, earned him the Big Ten's Third Star of the Week. His two goals on Friday helped the Badgers win 5-2 for their first win over MSU this season and marked De St. Phalle's first multi-goal game of his career.

The Illinois native has been a solid producer for UW all season and currently leads the team with seven goals. He's got points in seven of the last eight games.

3 - MOVING UP: The Badgers' pair of wins also allowed them to jump the Spartans for fifth place in the Big Ten standings with 16 points in 14 games. After their upcoming series with Penn State, who holds seventh place in the Big Ten, the Badgers return home to face current Big Ten-leader and third-ranked Michigan at the Kohl Center.

4 - MAXED OUT: Transfer forward Max Johnson embarked on a productive weekend with goals in each of the Badgers last two contests. Johnson scored on the power play on Friday night for his 25th career power-play goal, tying him for second in the NCAA among current skaters. His 13 career game-winning goals, including one in the Badgers' 4-2 win over Michigan this season, are the most of any player in the nation.

Johnson boasts 52 goals and 76 assists in 161 contests over his collegiate career.

5 - MILESTONE MALMQUIST: Freshman forward Liam Malmquist celebrated a major career milestone when he scored his first collegiate goal on Friday in rather unusual fashion. Malmquist, from behind the net, directed a rebound out in front of the crease where it banked off two Spartans' skates and into the net. He also recorded an assist on Johnson's goal the next night for a two-point weekend.

6 - HOW TO WATCH AT PENN STATE: Puck drop is set for 6 p.m. CT on Friday and 5 p.m. CT on Saturday. Catch the streams of both games at Bigtenplus.com and follow along on Twitter at @BadgerMHockey

7 - BONUS HOCKEY: The Badgers are set to welcome former Badgers from four NCAA Frozen Four teams back to the Kohl Center, as well as other alumni, for their weekend series against Michigan on Jan. 28-29. This year is the 50th anniversary for the 1972 NCAA Frozen Four Team, 45 years for the 1977 championship team, 40 years for the 1982 NCAA Frozen Four team and 30 years for the Badgers' 1992 Frozen Four squad.
