Badger junior earns top-five finish for second-straight year
MADISON, Wis. -- Thanks to a top-five finish by junior Bob Liking, the No. 6 Wisconsin men's cross country team earned a seventh-place finish at the 2022 Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational Presented by Under Armour at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course.
It marked the second top-five finish for Liking, the reining Big Ten cross country champion, at the Nuttycombe meet as he finished fifth at the 2021 edition of the meet. Liking crossed the line in 23 minutes, 14.0 seconds, four seconds behind Stanford's Ky Robinson who won the individual title in 23:09.9.
Senior Jack Meijer finished second for the Badgers and 41st overall, running a personal best of 23:40.7 and Grad student Charlie Wheeler right after in 42nd with 23:40.9.
Evan Bishop was the fourth Badger across the line in 23:53.2 while Rowen Ellenberg placed 68th in 23:53.5.
Wisconsin collected 221 points to finish seventh while second-ranked Stanford won their first-ever Nuttycombe title with a score of 54 points. Top-ranked BYU was second with 89 points while No. 3 NAU placed third with 145 points. The meet featured 19 ranked teams, including eight of the top-10 teams in the country.
B Race
Wisconsin finished 10th overall in the men's B race with 225 points. Senior Derick Peters finished first for the Badgers and 37th overall at 24:43.8, followed is redshirt-junior David Vannucchi in 41st at 24:49.6, and sophomore Jake Bourget in 44th at 24:53.1.
Freshman Micah Wilson competed unattached and was the ninth-place finisher in 24:23.0
On the team's finish:
"We came in here and wanted to have a good run. A seventh-place finish is a good start heading into championship season, but there were a couple of teams ahead of us that we wanted to finish above. But you look at some of the teams behind us, the regions that they are from, and we have the opportunity to grab some points. It gives us a little bit of a cushion heading into the big part of the season.
On Bob's fourth-place showing:
"That was a great run by Bob. You are looking at some of the best individuals in the country, guys that are going to be big players in November at the NCAA championships and Bob showed that he belongs up there. He's on track for what our goal for him has been all along."
Junior Bob Liking
"Yeah, it was a pretty good day. Um, we're not going to look too much into it. It's still pretty early in the season. Um, so I guess our team didn't have the race that we wanted to, but,I mean, we'll be added at in nationals. So, I got a lot of work to do but, you know, nice to get an effort like this. And it was a fun race, so it was good.
