Lucius breaks third-period tie for game-winner
MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin men's hockey team took down the LIU Sharks, 3-2, in the first game of their non-conference series on Friday at the Kohl Center.
The Badgers (3-8-0, 0-6-0 Big Ten) went on the power play just 20 seconds into the first period and sophomore Zach Urdahl took advantage to give UW an early lead. The forward fired a shot that went cross-bar down on the man advantage. Cruz Lucius found Urdahl on the wing as he entered the offensive zone who then passed to Ben Dexheimer on the blue line to open up a shooting lane. Dexheimer set up the shot and Owen Lindmark provided a screen in front of the net.
Mathieu De St. Phalle put the Badgers up 2-0 with under two minutes remaining in the first period. Dexheimer sent the puck deep for Liam Malmquist who set up De St. Phalle on the doorstep with a no-look pass from behind the net.
The Sharks' Anthony Vincent got LIU on the board midway through the second period, tapping in a rebound from a shot by Spencer Cox.
Vincent found the back of the net for a second time before the period was over to tie the score 2-2. Zachary Nazzarett picked off a pass in the Badger's zone and skated the puck behind the net where he threaded a pass across the crease for Vincent to hammer into the net.
The Badgers and Sharks skated into the second period knotted up at two a piece.
Lucius scored the tie-breaker at 13:32 of the third period to put UW back in the lead for good. Jack Gorniak rushed the puck into the Sharks' zone and connected with Tyson Jugnauth as he came across the blue line. The freshman defenseman laid out a pass for Lucius on the wing which he fired into the back of the net to make it 3-2.
Goaltender Jared Moe stood tall in net, blocking 23 shots on the night.
