Stieve Leads the Badgers at NCAA Great Lakes Regional

UW earns top-five finish at regional competition
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Thanks to a top-10 showing by senior Samantha Stieve, the No. 25 Wisconsin women's cross country team earned a fifth-place finish on Friday morning at the 2022 NCAA Great Lakes Regional at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country CourseÂ
The Badgers recorded 129 points in one of the toughest regional competitions in the country. No. 5 Notre Dame was the team champion, scoring 34 points for the win. Ohio State finished second with 111 points, while No. 21 Michigan took third with 116 points, and No. 19 Michigan State was fourth with 124 points.Â
Stieve had an outstanding race, leading the Badgers with her eighth-place finish, covering the 6,000-meter course in 20 minutes, 15.1 seconds. Stieve ran among the top 20 runners all race, moving up nine spots from the 2K mark to the 4K mark landing her a top-10 finish. Â
Shea Ruhly continued her strong season crossing in 20:18.6 for 14th place. Graduate student Lucinda Crouch placed 21st in 20:29.1 while senior Victoria Heiligenthal took 40th in 21:05.1. Senior Alexa Westley was back racing for the Badgers placing 46th in a time of 21:08.7, Vivian Hacker was just a second behind Westley, placing 47th in 21:09.8. Redshirt senior  Peyton Sippy crossed in 21:13.7 to place 52nd.

"I mean it's the same for the women like you know you can win with this attitude if you play it down to much than it's going to  get really ugly and can really hurt. The message to both teams was run how your capable of running you have seven day to recover, lets not overthink this lets not make it any harder than it should be, but you know stay alert and you qualify. The women are in a good position within those points, very close race if you look at those point scores, outside of Notre Dame it was really close. We think we've done enough over the season to make it"Â
