Badgers sink Sharks in OT

Zach Urdahl nets OT winner

MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Badgers men's hockey team completed a series sweep of the LIU Sharks with a 4-3 OT victory at the Kohl Center on Saturday.

Wisconsin battled back from a two-goal deficit, aided by a pair of goals from freshman forwards and a game-winning goal by Zach Urdahl.

The Sharks (1-8-1 Independent) drew first blood seven minutes into the first period. Josh Zary buried a feed from Preston Brodziak and Jordan Di Cicco in front of the net.

LIU doubled their lead in the 12th minute when Adam Goodsir seized a loose puck in the neutral zone and broke away before sending it past Jared Moe with a back-hand shot.

Wisconsin (4-8-0, 0-6-0 0-0-0 Big Ten) headed into the second period facing a two-goal deficit.

Sam Stange cut the Shark's lead in half when he buried a wrist shot six minutes into the second period. Zach Urdahl sent a stretch pass through the neutral zone for Dominick Mersch who got control of the puck and set up Stange as he entered the zone.

Freshman forward Jack Horback tied the score with a short-handed breakaway. He scooped up the puck in the Badgers' zone and blew past an LIU defender before lifting a back-hand shot past goaltender Vinnie Purpura.

The Sharks quickly restored their lead when Austin Brimmer tipped in a feed from Dylan Schuett and Gustav Müller.

Wisconsin's Charlie Stramel evened the score, 3-3, in the third minute of the third period. Daniel Laatsch skated the puck over the blue line and dropped the puck to Jack Gorniak who set up Stramel on the far side for a clear shot on net.

Still tied after sixty minutes, the Badgers headed to overtime for the first time this season.

Urdhal called the game when he picked the top corner off a feed from Ben Dexheimer to win it for Wisconsin, 4-3.
