Sharp named Big Ten Athlete of the Year

All-American led Badgers to sixth-place finish at NCAAs
MADISON, Wis. – After leading the Badgers to their highest placing at the NCAA Championships in a decade, Wisconsin men's cross country senior Jackson Sharp was named the Big Ten Conference Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Year, the conference announced on Wednesday.
Sharp is the first Badger since Morgan McDonald in 2018 to be named the Big Ten Athlete of the Year and is the 11th different Badger to earn the award since it was introduced in 1987.
A native of Wentworth Falls, Australia, Sharp finished second at the 2022 Big Ten Championships, just one tenth of a second behind teammate Bob Liking, to lead the Badgers to their 53rd conference title. For his efforts, Sharp earned first-team All-Big Ten honors for the second time in his career.
Sharp was UW's top finisher at last Saturday's NCAA Championships, placing 16th to earn the first All-America honor of his career. He led the Badgers to a sixth-place showing at the National meet, their highest finish since finishing runner-up at the 2012 NCAA Championships. Â
Sharp's honor completes a sweep of the individual honors for the Badgers as UW Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mick Byrne was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year while Adam Spencer was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
