MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men's and women's basketball teams, in partnership with Under Armour, unveiled new alternate uniforms on Friday to be worn during the 2022-23 season.
For the Wisconsin men's basketball team, it marks the third edition of the "By the Players" uniform, which allows players on the team to work in collaboration with Under Armour to design the alternates themselves.
For this season's design, players within the UW men's basketball program worked to create the look in representation of diversity and inclusion. The black uniforms feature gold pinstripes that contain the words "EQUALITY, UNITY, WISCONSIN FORWARD" within the stripes.
Featured on the back of the men's alternate jersey above each player's last name is the university crest logo with the "W" in black. During the summer of 2020, current and former Badger student-athletes publicly stated their desire to wear the university's "Crest W" on their athletic uniforms. The "W" in the crest is white, but was changed to black on UW athletic uniforms during the 2020-21 season in a showing of solidarity with Black and other underrepresented communities on campus.
The Wisconsin women's alternate black uniforms feature a large red Motion W front and center on the jersey above the player numbers. Five red stripes run down the side of the uniform to represent the five pillars of the program: Winning Mindset, Integrity, Selflessness, Communication and Legacy.
The UW women are scheduled to wear their black alternate uniforms for the first time on Nov. 13 in their home opener vs. North Florida. As part of UW's continued celebration of the 50th anniversary of Title IX, the UW women will wear their alternates again for future games during the months of November and December.
The Badger men are scheduled to debut their black alternate uniforms at home on Jan. 17 vs. Penn State during
Wisconsin Athletics' celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Week of Service, Jan. 16-22, then later again in the season in recognition of Black History Month.
Neither the men's nor women's uniforms will be available for public purchase, as they were intended exclusively to be worn by the teams.
