Forward becomes the fifth Badger to be named rookie of the week
MADISON, Wis. -- After a four-point weekend that led the No. 2 Badgers to their second-straight sweep, Wisconsin women's hockey freshman Laila Edwards has been named the WCHA Rookie of the Week, the league announced on Monday.Â
A native of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, Edwards became the fifth Badger freshman to be named the WCHA Rookie of the Week and the 10th different Badger to earn WCHA weekly honors this season.Â
Edwards had a goal and three helpers over the weekend at Minnesota State to help UW extend its unbeaten run to seven games heading into the holiday break.Â
On Friday, Edwards posted a career-high three assists, including the assist on the game-winning goal, to lead the Badgers to a 5-2 win against the Mavericks. The winger added a goal in UW's 5-1 series finale on Saturday and ended the weekend with four points, which was tied for the most by a league rookie with fellow linemate Kirsten Simms.Â
Edwards and the No. 2 Badgers resume action on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 with a series at No. 4 Quinnipiac. Puck drop on both days is set for 2 p.m. CT and fans can watch the action on ESPN+.Â
