Duo led No. 2 Badgers to sweep at Bemidji State
MADISON, Wis. – After leading the second-ranked Wisconsin women's hockey team to a record-breaking weekend at Bemidji State, forward Britta Curl and defender Vivian Jungels earned WCHA Player of the Week honors, the league announced on Monday.
Curl, the Badgers' captain, was named the WCHA Forward of the Week while Jungels collected WCHA Rookie of the Week accolades for the first time.
A native of Bismarck, North Dakota, Curl posted her first collegiate hat trick in the Badgers' 13-1 win at Bemidji State on Friday night, UW's largest win ever against a WCHA foe. The senior also added two assists to set a career high in points with five. She added two goals on Saturday, including the game-winning tally, to lead UW to a 4-1 triumph and complete the sweep of the Beavers. Her seven points were tied for the most by a WCHA skater as teammates Sophie Shirley and Casey O'Brien also enjoyed seven-point outings at BSU, while her +9 plus/minus rating also led all league skaters.
Jungels, a native of Edina, Minnesota, had a four-point weekend thanks to two goals and two assists against the Beavers. She scored and added an assist in UW's 13-1 win on Friday before scoring the game's first goal and chipping in a helper in the Badgers' 4-1 win on Saturday. Jungels ended the weekend with a +6 plus/minus rating, which was second-best among league defenders.
Curl and Jungels are the eighth and ninth different Badgers this year to earn WCHA weekly accolades. In addition, Jungels is the fourth different Badger rookie to earn WCHA Rookie of the Week honors this year.
The No. 2 Badgers wrap up the first half of the season with a trip to Minnesota State this weekend. Puck drop on Friday at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center is set for 6 p.m. while Saturday's series finale begins at 3 p.m.
