LEESBURG, Fla. -- Facing a ranked opponent for the third day in a row during opening weekend at the Northern Lights Tournament, Wisconsin overcame Akron 4-2 in game one of its double-header, falling to No. 11 Missouri, 8-1.
In the first matchup of the day for the Badgers, junior
Abby Herbst started in the circle for Wisconsin going three full innings good for four strikeouts and only allowing one hit through 14 batters faced.
Akron scored first as the zips put up an unearned run in the top of the first inning. Responding with a run of their own, the Badgers tied the game at one with aÂ
Jolie Fish RBI scoring Eden Dempey, pinch running for
Kayla Konwent after she singled.
With
Tessa Magnanimo taking over in the circle for Wisconsin in the fourth inning, the junior recorded quick outs for the Badgers facing only 13 batters in four innings, recording two strikeouts in the process.Â
Wisconsin reclaimed the lead for good in the fourth inning when Dempsey reached on an error and
Fiona Girardot drawing a walk, putting runners at first and second for emerging RBI leader
Jolie Fish. In little league style fashion, Fish hit a double to left center, scoring Dempsey and Girardot. The Akron defense tried to make a play on Girardot at the plate, advancing Fish to third. Another throw to third in attempt to catch Fish on the run spelled a throwing error for the zips, giving Fish a free lane to the play, all in the same play.
Herbst would be the winning pitcher while Magnanimo records her first save of the season as the Badgers go on to win, 4-2 over Akron.
In game two of the day, facing their highest ranked opponent of the tournament, No. 11 Missouri entered the game 1-1 overall on the year. Wisconsin went with the pitching duo of sophomore
Ava Justman and senior
Maddie Schwartz who combined for three total strikeouts on the day.
The Tigers scored first putting up two runs in the second and three runs in the third to take an early 5-0 lead.
Wisconsin answered in the sixth with a Konwent single followed by
Skylar Sirdashney double to right center. Dempsey – pinch running to Konwent – scored all the way from first making the score 5-1.
Missouri had a response of their own scoring three in the sixth inning, breaking the game open 8-1. The score would remain through the Badger's last at-bats with Wisconsin falling 8-1 to the No. 11 Tigers.
