Senior class powers Wisconsin victory
MADISON, Wis. — A three-goal first period lifted the Wisconsin men's hockey team to a 5-3 victory over No. 11 Notre Dame on Saturday at the Kohl Center.
The Badgers (9-19-3, 6-14-1 1-2-0 Big Ten) honored their senior class before puck drop and the team honored them with the first goal of the game.
Mathieu De St. Phalle struck first for the Badgers at 8:07 in the first period for his ninth goal of the season. Carson Bantle battled for the puck in Notre Dame's zone and fed a pass up the boards for De St. Phalle. He scooped up the puck and crossed the top of the zone, letting off a wrist shot and beating goaltender Ryan Bischel short side.
Notre Dame tied the score at one apiece when Ryder Rolston converted on a tic-tac-toe play at the two-minute mark of the first period. Charlie Raith found Solag Bakich on the right face-off dot who set up Rolston with a one-timer across the slot.
Ryder Donovan put the Badgers back in the lead just 23 seconds later when he crossed through the crease and slipped the puck past Bischel. Gorniak dug the puck out of the corner and passed to Liam Malmquist who let off a shot and created a rebound for Donovan to jam home.
Two goals just weren't enough for the Badgers in the first period. Anthony Keher made it 3-1 Wisconsin after netting his first career goal in the final minute of the period. Bantle got bumped off the puck but De St. Phalle was there to feed a pass to Kehrer on the point. The sophomore defenseman ripped a shot that hit the top corner.
Senior forward Josh Ess expanded the Badgers' lead in the second period, firing a wrister off the crossbar and into the net. De St. Phalle and Gorniak battled down low for assists on the goal.
The Fighting Irish got one back with 2:30 left to play in regulation. Bakich slotted in the rebound off a shot by Chase Blackmun, assisted by Cam Burke.
Notre Dame then surged to within 4-3 with just over a minute remaining. ND pulled its goalie for an extra attacker and set up in the Badgers' zone. Jesse Lansdell got the puck in the corner and found Blackmun up top. He set up Grant Silianoff on the point for a one-timer to force the Badgers on their heels.
Jack Gorniak took advantage of Notre Dame's empty net with a shot from the redline, assisted by Dominick Mersch and Roman Ahcan to produce an all-senior tally.
The Badgers held onto their lead to win 5-3, upsetting the No. 11 Fighting Irish.
Jared Moe made 38 saves to back-stop Wisconsin's victory
