Border Battle rivals set to meet Monday night in pivotal preliminary clash
BEIJING – Alex Cavallini made her first start at the Olympics for the United States, stopping all 12 shots she faced to lead the U.S. to an 8-0 win over Switzerland in the third game of preliminary action at the 2022 Winter Olympics.
Cavallini, who also was on the U.S. team at the 2018 Winter Olympics, became the second Badger to earn a start in net for Team USA at the Winter Olympics. Fellow Badger legend Jessie Vetter appeared in two Olympics for the Red, White and Blue.
"It's really special," Cavallini told USA Today after the game. "To go through a whole Olympics not playing a minute, but being able to be a great teammate, and this time along, being able to get my first Olympic start is really truly special, I can't thank my teammates enough for the support that they've given me – my family, my coaches, my friends, to get me back here is something truly amazing. It was awesome to be able to get that win today."
Hilary Knight also scored and added an assist for the U.S., who improved to 3-0 in preliminary action.Â
Canada moved to 3-0 with a 6-1 win over the Russian Olympic Committee. After recording a hat trick in Canada's second game of the Olympics, Sarah Nurse added a goal and an assist in Sunday's contest.Â
The U.S. and Canada will meet on Monday night in a 10:10 p.m. CT clash that can been seen live on USA Network or on Peacock.
