Badgers earn eight All-America honors

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Behind eight All-Americans, the Wisconsin men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up their indoor seasons at the NCAA Championships on Friday and Saturday.

The Badger men picked up seven All-America honors, scoring 16 points to tie for 14th in the team race. Wisconsin earned its 23rd overall top-20 finish in program history and the fifth under Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Mick Byrne and was also the top Big Ten Conference team at the championships.

"At this meet, you have to compete hard for every single point," said Byrne. "Last night, L.O. (Johnson) got the ball rolling advancing to the 60-meter final. He set a high standard and the guys responded well. Our (distance medley relay) team believed they had a legit shot of winning and raced like they meant business. They came up a little short finishing third, but what a great race to be part of with three teams running 9:25.

"Today's 60-meter final live up to all the hype. LO's 6.56 PR in his first NCAA final was terrific and Olin's (Hacker) fourth-place finish in a crazy slow 3K, with a barn-burner last 600 meters, was just awesome. Andrew Stone, who competed in his first national meet finished a credible ninth and I'm sure he'll be back next year to improve on this.

"Overall as a team, to tie for 15th and be the top Big Ten team at the meet is rewarding as we close out the indoor season."

The UW women earned one All-American honor as senior Josie Schaefer finished 14th in the shot put.

The Badger men were led by the distance medley relay team that finished third. The quartet of Adam Spencer, Davis Wenthe, Abdullahi Hassan and Jackson Sharp ran the second-fastest time in program history, crossing the line in 9 minutes, 25.78 seconds.

Spencer put the Badgers in the lead after the 1,200-meter leg, running 2:53.49. Wenthe kept the Badgers in first with his 47.85 400-meter leg. Hassan ran 1:47.54 for 800 meters to keep the team among the lead pack. Sharp ran 3:56.91 for 1600 meters to bring the Badgers home in third place. All four UW athletes earned their first first-team All-America honors.

"That was fun to watch," said Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Mick Byrne. "To see those guys in the race the entire time, competing for a national title, believe they could win a national title and they went after it."

Wisconsin also picked up two fourth-place individual finishes.

Junior Lawrence Johnson earned his first All-America honor, finishing fourth in the 60-meter dash. The Waunakee native had to run the race twice as the first final was called back after an apparent false start. That didn't stop Johnson as he ran his second personal best of the meet, crossing the line in 6.56, just .01 seconds off the UW record of 6.55 set by Demi Omole in 2007.

Redshirt senior Hacker also earned a fourth-place finish, using an incredible last lap to move up five places in the 3,000 meters. With 200 meters remaining, Hacker was in ninth place before using his kick to cross the line in 8:00.39, earning his first first-team All-America honor.

Junior Stone earned honorable mention All-America honors in the men's shot put. Competing in his first national championship. Stone finished ninth with a throw of 64 feet, 5 3/4 inches.

In the women's shot put, Schaefer earned honorable mention All-America honors, finishing 14th with a throw of 52-10 3/4.
