You've Said it All: Badgers extend nation's best streak

Wisconsin’s success in football and men’s basketball over the last 30 years is unparalleled

MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Badgers are synonymous with success. It was not a surprise to see the Motion W appear on the screen Sunday night as UW earned its 22nd invitation to the NCAA tournament in the last 23 years. And that invite extended an impressive streak that now spans 30 years.

Since the start of the 1992-93 season, Wisconsin's football and men's basketball teams have combined to make 51 appearances in bowl games and NCAA tournaments. That is the most combined appearances of any school in the country:

Most Combined Bowl & NCAA Tourney Appearances (since 1992-93)

  1. Wisconsin – 51
  2. Florida – 48
  3. Texas – 47
  4. Michigan State – 46
    North Carolina – 46

UW is one of only five schools to have appeared in at least 22 of the past 23 NCAA tourneys. The Badgers played in 19 straight NCAA tournaments from 1999-2017, the sixth-longest streak in NCAA history. For a program that didn't make the NCAA tournament from 1947 to 1994, this current stretch of consistent success is remarkable.

The Badger football team has a remarkable streak of its own. Wisconsin has played in a bowl game in 20 consecutive seasons, the third-longest active streak in the country and tied for the 10th-longest streak in history. Prior to 1993, UW had played in just six bowl games.

Once in the postseason, Wisconsin has also found success at the highest levels. UW made back-to-back runs to the Final Four in 2014 and 2015 and won back-to-back New Year's Six bowls in 2016 and 2017. In fact, over the last nine seasons, only Kentucky has more combined bowl and NCAA tournament victories:

Most Combined Bowl & NCAA Tourney Wins (since 2013-14)

  1. Kentucky – 22
  2. Wisconsin – 21
  3. North Carolina – 19
  4. Duke – 18
    Michigan State – 18

UW's coaching tandem of Greg Gard and Paul Chryst is among the nation's best. Both have two Big Ten Coach the Year honors to their names, making Wisconsin the only FBS school whose current football and men's basketball coaches have won multiple conference coach of the year awards.

Since 2015, when Chryst and Gard started their head coaching tenures at UW, the Badgers have combined to win 127 conference games in football and men's basketball. That is second-most among major conference teams:

Combined FB & MBB Conference Wins (since 2015-16)

  1. Ohio State – 129 (Big Ten)
  2. Wisconsin – 127 (Big Ten)
  3. Michigan – 125 (Big Ten)
  4. Oregon – 124 (Pac-12)
  5. Virginia – 122 (ACC)
Michigan State – 122 (Big Ten)

Individually, Johnny Davis was named Big Ten Player of the Year this season. He is on pace to become the fourth Badger since 2004 to be named a Wooden Award All-American, joining Devin Harris (2004), Alando Tucker (2007) and Frank Kaminsky (2015). Since 2011, the Badgers have had four players finish among the top 10 of the voting for the Heisman Trophy: Montee Ball (2011), Russell Wilson (2011), Melvin Gordon (2014) and Jonathan Taylor (2019).

Wisconsin, Oklahoma and Ohio State are the only schools in the country that can claim at least four different Wooden Award All-Americans and four different Heisman Trophy top-10 finishers over the last 20 years.
