DETROIT — Friday's competition at the 2022 NCAA Championships proved to be full of lows and highs for Wisconsin wrestling. A rough start in Session Three's morning rounds saw five of the Badgers' six remaining qualifiers take losses. Friday night's Session Four -- also known as the Blood Round -- gave Wisconsin fans three All-Americans to celebrate as Eric Barnett (125 pounds), Austin Gomez (149) and Dean Hamiti (165) all earned the exceptional honors.
Gomez and Hamiti remain on viable paths towards at least third place in their respective weight classes, while Barnett will wrestle for seventh-place on Saturday morning. This also marks the highest number of All-Americans honored in UW head coach Christ Bono's four-year tenure, following after the Badgers' nine NCAA qualifiers also established a new record for Bono and staff.
In the team standings, Wisconsin fell from 13th (12.5 points) to 22nd (13.5) after Session III, but rallied back to 16th (32.0) tied with North Carolina after Session Four.
UW's unofficial 'Iron Man' of the tournament with six bouts wrestled so far, Barnett won three bouts on Friday including a 7-3 decision over Virginia Tech's Sam Latona to earn his second career NCAA All-America honor (he finished 8th in 2021). Barnett lost an 11-6 decision to Patrick McKee (Minnesota) on Friday night and will wrestle Brandon Kaylor (Oregon State) again on Saturday in the seventh-place match. Barnett lost a 9-3 decision to Kaylor on Thursday and will be looking for redemption and a higher podium finish.
After qualifying to the NCAA quarterfinals on Thursday, both Gomez and Hamiti suffered losses in Friday's morning session and entered the consolation brackets for the evening bouts.
Gomez, the 2022 Big Ten Champion, defeated Oklahoma State's Kaden Gfeller 7-4 to earn his first career All-America honor. He then won a 6-2 decision over NC State's Tariq Wilson to advance into Saturday's consolation semifinal. Gomez will face Sammy Sasso (Ohio State), who he beat in the Big Ten final to win the Championship just two weeks ago.Â
True freshman Dean Hamiti earned his own All-America honors with a 8-0 major decision over Pittsburgh's Jake Wentzel. He later defeated Peyton Hall (West Virginia) with a 10-6 decision to advance to the consolation semifinals on Saturday. He will wrestle Michigan's Cameron Amine.
Three of the Badgers remaining six qualifiers saw their seasons end after morning losses. Wisconsin's Joseph Zargo (141), Braxton Amos (197) and Trent Hillger (285) all ended their tournament runs during Session Three.
Session Five begins on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. CT. Full results for all UW wrestlers are available below.
