Badgers claim first game of Big Ten tournament over Notre Dame

Jared Moe backstops 3-1 win with 49 saves
SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The Wisconsin men's hockey team rallied over the No. 7 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (25-10-0) in game one of their best-of-three Big Ten tournament match up at Compton Family Ice Arena.
Wisconsin (10-22-3) came out of the gate ready to battle as the sixth seeded team in the tournament.
Senior forward Brock Caufield provided the Badgers with a 1-0 lead at 15:22 in the first period. Carson Bantle sent the puck up the ice for Mathieu De St. Phalle who out-skated the Fighting Irish and fed a pass across to Caufield as he entered the zone all alone. Caufield then fired a wrist shot off the far post and into the twine.
The Fighting Irish briefly evened the score, 1-1, in the second period on the power play when Graham Slaggert converted on a cross from Nick Leiverman and Ryder Rolston.
Thirty-eight seconds later, Dominick Mersch notched his fifth goal of the season to put the Badgers back on top. Corson Ceulemans slid a pass across the blue line to Tyler Inamoto. The super-senior defenseman fired a shot on net that Mersch tipped past Notre Dame's Matthew Galajda.
Zach Urdahl added to Wisconsin's tally on a tic-tac-toe play with Sam Stange and tucked the puck in the net for a 3-1 lead.
Notre Dame pulled their goaltender in favor of an extra skater in the final minutes to no avail, leading the Badgers to a 3-1 win.
