On to Game 3: Badgers edged at Notre Dame

Late Fighting Irish goal forces game three in Big Ten tournament matchup

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The Wisconsin men's hockey team battled back from a 2-0 deficit, but fell 3-2 on a last-minute goal at No. 7 Notre Dame in the second game of their best-of-three series in the first round of the Big Ten tournament.

Following their win the previous night, sixth-seeded Wisconsin (10-23-3) was playing for another victory to claim the series in just two games.

The Fighting Irish wasted no time getting on the board. A power-play opportunity led to a goal from Graham Slaggert on the faceoff dot, assisted by Landon Slaggert and Ryder Rolston for Notre Dame's first lead of the series.

Notre Dame then went up 2-0 during a stretch of four-on-four play when Zach Plucinski found the back of the net. Nick Leivermann started the play with a stretch pass to Jake Pivonka on the far blue line, who bumped the puck to Plucinski as he skated into the zone and squared off with Jared Moe.

After drawing a penalty, Roman Ahcan scored on the power play to get the Badgers on the board halfway through the second period. Corson Ceulemans set up Mathieu De St. Phalle for a slapshot from the point. The puck took a bounce in front of the net to the stick of Ahcan who hammered it into the net, aided by a screen from Carson Bantle.

That put the Badgers within one of Notre Dame's 2-1 lead.

Bantle buried the puck on the power play at 3:23 into the third period to tie it up for the Badgers. De St. Phalle put a shot on net and created a rebound. Caufield got his stick on the puck but it was Bantle who sent it over the goal line.

Wisconsin and Notre Dame battled all knotted up at 2-2 until Notre Dame's Trevor Janicke scored with just 20 seconds remaining to win it for the Fighting Irish. Slaggert won the puck back to Spencer Stastney on a neutral zone face, who then rushed into the Badgers' zone and wrapped around the net, putting the puck on the doorstep for Janicke.

Wisconsin pulled Moe in favor of a sixth skater but was unable to tie the score in the final seconds, falling 3-2 to Notre Dame.
