Badgers fall 2-1 to OSU in WCHA semifinal

Shirley scores lone goal for UW in setback

MINNEAPOLIS – The fourth-ranked Wisconsin women's hockey team jumped out to a 1-0 lead over No. 2 Ohio State but ultimately fell to the Buckeyes, 2-1, in the semifinal round of the 2022 WCHA Final Faceoff at Ridder Arena on Saturday.

Sophie Shirley scored the lone goal for the Badgers (25-7-4) and UW outshot the Buckeyes (28-6) The Badgers (25-7-4) outshot the Buckeyes (28-6) 34-18 but were only able to get one goal up during the game. Sophie Shirley netted that puck.

The game remained scoreless after one period of play, though Wisconsin outshot Ohio State 11-5 in the first frame.

Shirley lit the lamp just over a minute into the second period to break the deadlock and give the Badgers a 1-0 lead over the Buckeyes. Ohio State answered with a goal and tacked on another to get a 2-1 lead over Wisconsin.

Neither team was able to score in the final frame either. The clock expired with Ohio State up 2-1.

Kennedy Blair made 16 saves in the net.
