Five events to watch: Badgers compete at three different meets

Wisconsin sends top relays to Penn Relays
MADISON, Wis— The Wisconsin men's track and field team competes in three different meets this weekend, including two prestigious relay events. The Badger distance runners head to the Penn Relays in Philadelphia while other relays and individuals will compete at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. The throwers head to UW-Whitewater for the Whitewater Invitational.
The men's 5,000 meters will be held Thursday night at Penn Relays while all other events will be held on Friday and Saturday.

Here are the five events to watch:
1. RELAYS TO WATCH: Wisconsin's top distance runners head to Philadelphia this Thursday-Saturday to compete at the Penn Relays. The Badgers will compete in the Championship of America distance medley relay and 4xmile relay. Expected to compete are members of UW's All-American distance medley relay -- Abdullahi Hassan, Jackson Sharp, Adam Spencer and Davis Wenthe. Potential members of the 4xmile-relay include Evan Bishop, Olin Hacker, Seth Hirsch, Bob Liking, Jack Meijer, and Charlie Wheeler.
2. 5K ALL THE WAY: Redshirt sophomore Rowen Ellenberg will run in the Penn Relays 5,000 meters on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. CT. Ellenberg ran a personal best of 13 minutes, 46.37 seconds in the 5K at last weekend's Oregon Relays.
3. CLEAR THE WAY : Redshirt junior Canon Melstrand will be competing in the pole vault at the Drake Relays on Friday at 5:15 p.m. Melstrand is ranked 20th in the Big Ten this season, setting a season best of 15-11.
4. THROW FAR BADGERS: The Badger throwers will have a busy day on Friday with the hammer starting at noon in Whitewater. Cole Hooper threw a personal best of 202-5 in the hammer last weekend at the Oregon Relays, ranking him 11th in the Big Ten this season. Grad transfer Sam Coil ranks 14th in the Big Ten with a toss of 198-10 while Dan Ufearo ranks 17th in the conference, throwing a personal best of 193-9 at the Jim Click Shootout on April 9. All three athletes rank in the top 10 in the hammer at Wisconsin.
In the discus, redshirt freshman Jason Swarens has a personal best of 165-10 this season while redshirt sophomore Andrew Stone has a season best of 159-5. The discus follows the hammer on Friday.
5. THE SHOT PUT SHOW: Stone leads the Badgers in the shot put this season, throwing a season best of 62-2 1/2, which ranks sixth in the Big Ten this season. Swarens has an outdoor season best of 57-1 1/2 set last weekend in Oregon. They will be joined by Coil and redshirt freshman Nick Tomasovic, who opens his his outdoor season.
