Five events to watch: Big Ten Outdoor Championships

Badgers travel to Minnesota for conference meet
MADISON,Wis—The Wisconsin men's track and field team heads to Minneapolis for the Big Ten Outdoor Championships this weekend. Events begin on Friday with day one of the decathlon and throwing events at noon. Running events begin at 5:35 p.m. with the final of the 10,000 meters starting at 8:15 p.m.

Here are five events to wtach this weekend.
1. TOP-TIER THROWS: Coming off a school-record setting weekend, redshirt sophomore Andrew Stone is looking to challenge for the Big Ten title in the shot put. Stone currently ranks third in the Big Ten with his record throw of 65 feet, 6 1/4 inches. he shot put at UW of 65-6 ¼. Less than three inches separate the top-three throwers in the conference. Redshirt sophomore Jason Swarens ranks 12th in the Big Ten with an throw of 59-2 1/4. Stone also threw a personal best in the discus last weekend, ranking ninth in the Big Ten at 178-9 while Swarens ranks 18th at 165-10.
In the hammer, sophomore Cole Hooper is ranked 11th in the Big Ten with a personal best throw of 205-5. Graduate transfer Sam Coil is ranked 15th at 200-9 while Swarens is 17th at 196-3.
2. DISTANCE DOMINATION: Grad Olin Hacker is looking to add a Big Ten outdoor championship to his 2022 Big Ten Indoor titles in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters. Hacker is ranked second in the 5,000 meters in the conference this season, running a personal best of 13 minutes, 19.34 seconds. Following in fourth is sophomore Bob Liking, who ran a personal best of 13:37.24. Wisconsin has six of the top-10 times in the 5,000 meters in the Big Ten this season as Charlie Wheeler ranks sixth (13:42.42), Evan Bishop is eighth (13:45.59), Rowing Ellenberg ranks ninth (13:46.37) and Seth Hirsch is seeded 10th (13:47.50).
In the 10K, Wheeler is ranked second in the conference this season with a time of 28:55.23. Hirsch is seeded fourth in the Big Ten in 29:09.42 while Shuaib Aljabaly is ranked fifth in 29:11.20.
3. MIDDLE DISTANCE MAVENS: Wisconsin looks to score in the 800 meters and 1500 meters as sophomore Abdullahi Hassan and freshman Adam Spencer rank second in the Big Ten in their respective events. Hassan has run 1:47.66 in the 800 meters this season, just .16 seconds behind the conference leader. In the 1500 meters, Spencer ran a personal best of 3:37.40 to be less than half a second out of first. Junior Jackson Sharp will also compete in the middle distance events.
4. LET'S GO L.O.: Junior Lawrence Johnson leads the Badgers in the sprints this weekend, ranking fifth in the 100-meter dash in 10.27. He also ranks 12th in the 200-meter dash in 21.02 while anchoring the UW's 4x100-metere relay.
5. DA BEST DECATHLON: Wisconsin enters four athletes into the decathlon, challenging for the title of best all-around athletes. Grad transfer Jack Herkert leads the Badgers and ranks seventh in the Big Ten with 7,113 points. Junior Max Herkert follows his brother, ranking 10th in the conference with 6,583 points. Cade Amborn and Quinn Lansill will also compete in the 10-event classic.
