Wisconsin earns medals in three events
MINNEAPOLIS -- Recording its best team finish in 2 years, the Wisconsin women's track and field team finished second at the Big Ten Conference Outdoor Championships on Sunday. The Badgers scored 98 points, their most points since 2010 when they finished third, to pick up its best outdoor finish since 1999. Ohio State won its third-straight championship, scoring 185.5 points.
"There are no easy points handed out at the Big Ten Championships. You have to fight for every point," said Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Mick Byrne. "I'm extremely proud of our men and women who competed hard all weekend. Our athletes were competing this weekend with heavy, but inspired hearts. They all competed for and with Sarah (Shulze).
"Both teams scored 90-plus points, well above our projected scores. Both distance squads put up big points in the 10k, 5k and women's steeplechase, but it was our sprinters, multi-events and throwers who really stepped up and gave us much needed points."
Â
Senior Bianca Stubler earned a silver medal in the 400-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 57.58 seconds. Junior Destiny Huven picked up a bronze medal in the 100-meter hurdles in 13.09. To conclude the Badger's success, Olympic Trials qualifier Josie Schaefer placed third in the shot put with a mark of 56 feet, 7 ½ inches.
Â
Armoni Brown, Kiley Robbins, Taylor Gilling and Huven teamed to finish sixth in the 4x100-meter relay in 45.14. Robbins also finished eighth in the 100 meters in 10.42. Her time would have broken her own school record, but the wind speed exceeded time validity.
Sophomore Victoria Heiligenthal placed sixth in the 1,500 meters, finishing in 4:25.29. Redshirt freshman Emma Watcke finished ninth, just out of scoring position, crossing in 4:26.79.Â
