Big Ten Pitcher and Big Ten Freshman of the Week are both Badgers
MADISON, Wis. -- After going 2-1 during last weekend's road trip to Penn State, Wisconsin softball senior Maddie Schwartz and freshman Ellie Hubbard both received Big Ten weekly awards for their performances against the Nittany Lions.
Schwartz was awarded the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week award after the senior through 20.2 innings at PSU this past weekend, looking nearly untouchable with a weekend ERA of 0.34 and only allowing seven total hits in her three starts. Schwartz only allowed one earned run all weekend while striking out 14 Penn State batters who combined for just a .099 average against Schwartz in the circle.
Pairing with Schwartz's dominance on the defensive side of the ball, Ellie Hubbard gave Wisconsin a spark all weekend from the plate. Going 6-11 on the weekend, Ellie was the most consistent Badger through all three games against Penn State. Hitting for two doubles and four singles, the young hitter also scored a run and plated one RBI. Defensively, she finished the weekend without any errors while totaling four putouts and five assists at second base.
These awards mark both Maddie's and Ellie's first weekly award of the season and first of their careers.
Schwartz, Hubbard and the rest of the Badgers will be back in action Wednesday for the rescheduled Border Battle with Minnesota. The midweek double header is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Minneapolis on Wednesday and fans can tune in on BTN+.
