Andrew Stone sets school record in the shot pot

MADISON, Wis. —The Wisconsin men's track and field team celebrated senior day and wrapped up its preparation for the Big Ten Conference Championships with the Wisconsin Classic on Friday. The Badgers won an impressive 12 events on the day.

Stone sets school record

With his fourth throw of the day, junior Andrew Stone shattered the Wisconsin school record in the shot put. Stone recorded a personal best and school record toss of 65 feet, 6 ¼ inches, surpassing Riley Budde who set the record at 63-8 ¾ in 2017. Stone's throw ranks him ninth in the NCAA this season and third in the Big Ten.

"Today I hit a school record (which) feels good going into Big Tens, considering I was throwing 18 meters low the past two weeks," said Stone. "I ramped it up with a record (and I) should be good to contend for the first place spot at Big Tens."

Redshirt freshman Jason Swarens finished fourth in the shot put with an outdoor personal best of 59-2 ¼ .

Stone also finished third in the discus with a personal best throw of 178-9. Redshirt freshman Jake Schaefer competed unattached and threw a personal best of 175-8 for third place.

Also in the throws, redshirt sophomore Cole Hooper won the hammer, recording a personal best of 202-8, ranking sixth all-time at Wisconsin. Transfer Sam Coil finished second in the hammer at 200-9 while Swarens finished fifth with a throw of 196-3. Senior Dan Ufearo placed sixth at 190-5.

Harris sweeps sprints

Freshman Elliott Harris swept the dashes at Friday's meet, claiming the 100 meters and 200 meters. Harris won the 100 meters in 10.92 seconds and followed that up with a winning time of 21.76 in the 200 meters.

Wisconsin claimed the top-two spots in the 800 meters with redshirt junior Ansel Fellman crossing in 1:51.25 for the win. Senior Hudson Kugel was close behind, finishing second in 1:51.79. Senior Liam Belson finished fourth in 1:57.34.

Australian native Jackson Sharp won the men's 1500 meters in 3:42.68, ranking him 12th in this Big Ten this season.

Freshman Jake Bourget made an impressive debut, competing unattached and winning the 5,000 meters in 14:13.00. Freshman Oliver Paleen finished second in 14:50.62 while freshman Ben Schnoor, also competed unattached and placed third in 14:51.65.

Redshirt senior Jack Herkert won the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.96 while redshirt sophomore Quinn Lansill was just a tenth of a second back, crossing in 15.07 for second place.

Senior Kavanugh FitzPatrick took home a firt place in the 3000-meter steeplechase, crossing in a personal best time of 9:11.98.

Field event stars

Senior Cade Amborn won the men's high jump with a personal best clearance of 6-9 ½ while redshirt junior Chandlar Ifft finished second in the pole vault with a personal best height of 16-5 ¼. Senior Canon Melstrand finished third in the vault with a clearance of 15-5 ½.

In the triple jump, Wisconsin claimed the top-two places. Senior Connor Barfknecht won the triple jump with a leap of 46-10 while senior Peyton Frankenreider finished second with a jump of 46-6 ¾.
