Finnegan pair, Iribarren goal, Abbott saves erased by severe weather

MADISON, Wis. – Thunder storms were all that could stop the Wisconsin men's soccer team on Sunday at McClimon Soccer Complex. The Badgers, up 3-0, got within 75 seconds from an official victory over No. 11 Tulsa, but the untimely appearance of lightning halted the action for good.

It officially goes down as a no contest after the teams played 68:15 of the required 70 minutes to make it count.

A scoreless first half played out, then a nine-minute stretch in the second half broke open the game for the Badgers.

Junior Jack Finnegan ran onto a clear from freshman Drew Brown and past the Tulsa defense before finishing in the 53rd minute.

Working with teammate Michael Wampler to pressure the Tulsa defense after a goal kick, Finnegan stole a goalkeeper pass and made it 2-0.

Senior Inaki Iribarren got his head on Aron Saevarsson's corner kick to put UW up 3-0 in the 62nd minute.

The lightning came six minutes later.

Goalkeeper Carter Abbott, fresh off a season-opening clean sheet, made three big stops in the second half to keep the Golden Hurricane off the board.

STRAIGHT FROM THE PITCH - HEAD COACH NEIL JONES
"I couldn't be prouder of our group today for their effort against an excellent Tulsa team. While the result doesn't stand, we can learn a lot from this game. I'm extremely disappointed we couldn't find a way to complete the game, but we move on to Milwaukee on Thursday, which will be another great test."
