Men's golf opens season with home tournament at University Ridge

UPDATE: The Badger Invitational Round 1 on Sunday, Sept. 11 is canceled due to rain. Updates regarding Monday's start time posted later on Sunday.

MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin men's golf is set to tee off the fall season on Sept. 11-13 at the Badgers' home course, University Ridge.

Here are five things to know before the team hits the links on Sunday:

1. Last Time Out: The Badgers qualified two golfers to the 2022 NCAA Regional. Griffin Barela finished T-60th with 73-76-75=224 (+11) and Cameron Huss completed his first NCAA appearance T-23rd with 74-69-73= 216 (+3). Huss also led the field in par-3 scoring with a 2.92 average.

2. The Course: Home of the Badgers, University Ridge is a par-72 and will be playing at 7,286 yards for the invitational. The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and is home to the annual American Family Insurance Championship tournament. 'U Ridge' is ranked second in the nation as the Best Public College Golf Course in the 2021 GolfPass rankings.

3. The Tournament: The Badger Invitational is in its 13th year, being held 2000-03, 2013-19 and back again in 2021. Wisconsin won the invitational in 2000 with a four-under-par 860. All three days of play will be tee-time format, starting at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday and Monday and 8:00 a.m. start on Tuesday.

4. The Field: Competing in the tournament are Augusta, Campbell, Cincinnati, Illinois State, Marquette, Maryland, Nebraska, Northern Illinois, Ole Miss, Purdue, South Carolina, South Dakota State, South Florida, Texas A&M, UAB, Western Carolina, Western Kentucky and Wisconsin. After team qualifying competitions, the Badgers' lineup is Cameron Huss, Coalter Smith, Clayton Tribus, Maxime Legros and Daniel Aas. Competing for Wisconsin as individuals are McCord Grice, Graham Moody, Carter Pitcairn, Max Schwarz, Ryan Smith and Spencer Turtz.
