Short-handed Badgers fall to Rutgers

Big crowd at McClimon, but Scarlet Knights prevail
MADISON, Wis – The men's soccer team fell to Rutgers at home Friday night, 2-0, playing the majority of the game with 10 men.

"Disappointing to lose with such a good crowd and a really good event pregame with the 'March to McClimon.' Playing 10 vs. 11 against a good Rutgers team is always going to be a challenge. Thought the guys put in a really good shift but it was not quite enough."
How it happened
It was an unlucky night for the Badgers, who took on Rutgers in their second Big Ten game of the season. The atmosphere was amazing at McClimon for Colony Night, with fans packing the stands. Unfortunately, Rutgers got on the board first when it scored in the 16th minute. Seven minutes later, senior midfielder Inaki Iribarren was handed a red card for a challenge which changed the pace of the game. Despite this, the Badgers managed to stay in it and even created a few chances before the half. However, Rutgers put themselves on the scoreboard once again in the 67th minute to put the game out of reach. Wisconsin kept battling to the end, pressing and creating chances until the final second.
Notes
- The official attendance was a season-high 1,117 for Colony Night.
- Before the game, the Badgers held their first 'March to McClimon' with a gathering on the north lawn of Dejope Residence Hall and an address by head coach Neil Jones. Led by drummers, the crowd then marched down Lakeshore Path to McClimon for the 2022 Big Ten home opener.
- Carter Abbott had himself a game and once again kept the Badgers in contention
- The Badgers had only one less shot than Rutgers and three less on target
