Wild comeback bid falls short against Notre Dame

Four power-play goals in the third period not enough for UW comeback

MADISON, Wis. —  Wisconsin men's hockey entered the third period down 5-0 to No. 20/18 Notre Dame, but a furious comeback that included four power-play goals fell short in a 6-4 defeat on Saturday at the Kohl Center.

The Fighting Irish (10-10-2, 5-6-1 Big Ten) came out of the gate eager to get on the board after suffering a shutout the previous night, tallying four goals in the first period.

Drew Bavaro scored on a wrist shot from the point at 5:32.

Three minutes later, Grant Silianoff and Bavaro set up Trevor Janicke for a one timer from the faceoff dot.

Bavaro netted his second goal of the game at 14:30 when the rebound of his shot that was stopped by UW's Jared Moe, bounced off a Badger defenseman and into the net.

Notre Dame capitalized on a power-play opportunity at the end of the first period when Jesse Lansdell finished a rebound from a Janicke shot.

Badger's goaltender Kyle McClellan took over for Jared Moe in net at the start of the second period.

The Fighting Irish took a five-goal lead when a Lansdell shot banked off Jack Adams at 19:04 of the second period.

Junior forward Mathieu De St. Phalle put Wisconsin on the board with a power-play goal at 1:13 in the third period. Brock Caufield got control of the puck along the boards in the offensive zone and connected with Cruz Lucius as he skated over the blue line. Lucius found De St. Phalle on the far side for a wrist shot that picked the top corner.

De St. Phalle netted his second power-play tally of the game at 9:28, set up by Lucius and Caufield along the top of the zone.

With just over five minutes remaining in the third period, Notre Dame's Jake Boltmann received a five-minute major for high sticking, giving the Badgers more hope.

At 15:37 in the third period, Carson Bantle slipped the puck past goaltender Ryan Bischel. Lucius and De St. Phalle worked the puck around the perimeter of the zone before finding Bantle down low.

Notre Dame's Janicke broke the momentum with a short-handed goal less than two minutes later to put his team up, 6-3.

But Bantle got things restarted at 18:39, jamming home a rebound for UW's fourth power-play marker of the night. The Badgers had their goaltender pulled for an extra attacker, as well.

That was as close as the Badgers would get, falling 6-4.
